Standard Bank Ovation Award Winning Pichi Keane (pronounced “peachy keen”) is a singing queen with an insatiable lust for life…and other delicacies! Freshly Squeezed is an award-winning drag cabaret bursting with flavour that’s sure to leave you with more than just a mouthful. Pichi jokes and sings about love, lube and being misgendered, while inviting the audience to embrace themselves and revel in queer joy. This juicy musical journey showcases a wealth of genres, and features hit songs by Chappell Roan, Taylor Swift, Qveen Herby, Lizzo and Miley Cyrus.

A provocative and quirky drag cabaret presented as part of the HEAT Winter Arts Festival. Pichi Keane’s performance delves into concepts of femininity and the patriarchal influences on their own life as a genderqueer drag artist. As a non-binary person in a female body, Pichi Keane has always felt that traditional femininity was something they performed – no dissimilar to drag. Drag has helped them explore gender and finally feel comfortable expressing their femininity, as well as given them a platform to advocate for social justice and healthy sexuality. With humour, wit, and song, Pichi Keane playfully prompts audiences to reevaluate their perspectives about gender, sex, and taboo. Their show Ripe ‘n Ready was the recipient of the Silver Standard Bank Standing Ovation Award.

Pichi Keane describes themself as a singing queen, glamour clown, and pleasure activist. Born in 2019 in Hong Kong, Pichi Keane quickly became a fixture in the local queer scene. Collaborating with their drag sister Trash Queen Doris, Pichi Keane co-produced various events like Get Trash’d and Big Bad Bingo Bonanza, as well as formed the band Pichi Keane and the Swing Machine. Now based in South Africa, Pichi Keane has delighted audiences with sold-out shows like Ripe n Ready and performed as a soloist on the main stage of the Cape Town Pride Festival Mardi Gras. They have also just released their debut single, Came Here To Dance.

Kort op die hakke van Pichi Keane (sy/hulle) se bekroonde debuut drag kabaret ‘Ripe ‘n Ready’, is ‘Soetsappig’ – ‘n eerlike blik op lewe as a genderqueer kunstenaar vasgevang in vroulike vorm . Die fopdosser het in 2023 opslae gemaak by die Nasionale Kunstefees in Makhanda waar sy ‘n Standard Bank Silver Ovation Award opgeraap het – tesame met vele feesgangers se harte. Later in dieselfde jaar is daar met hul drag kabaret ‘Ripe ‘n Ready’ ook ‘n toer van die Tuinroete voltooi, en alle venues was uitverkoop. Nou is sy opgewonde om haar eerste Afrikaanse kabaret aan te pak.

Pichi skerts en sing oor liefde, gender, en queer wees in ‘n tyd waar almal wonder wat in jou broek sit. ‘Soetsappig’ is eg kabaret, met staaltjies oor Pichi se ervaring as vroulike fopdosser en liedjies van verskeie musiekgenres wat saamgesnoer word soos Pichi probeer om die patriargie uit te pluis en femininiteit te ontlont met, onder andere, ‘n oorspronklike toonsetting van DJ Opperman se ‘Sproeireën’ en Appel se ‘Wys My Jou Lemoene’.

Selfs tussen al die gewaagde grappies deur, is daar altyd ‘n aspek van uitreik na die menslikheid in elke gehoorlid. Geen onder 18s word toegelaat as gevolg van die inhoud van die vertoning, oa kru taalgebruik en seksuele temas.

‘Soetsappig’ is wél vir jou as jy queer, kinky, of nuuskierig is, maar jy sal dit ook geniet as jy ‘n stoute sin vir humor besit.

Pichi Keane het begin optree as haar drag persona in 2019, toe sy in Hong Kong deelgeneem het aan ‘n mentorskap program as deel van die Eaton Hotel se Women’s Festival. Daarna hetsy tussen gesondheidsbeperkings deur by heelwat LGBTQ+ geleenthede opgetree as kunstenaaren emcee, selfs by die amptelike 2021 Hong Kong Pride Afterparty. As opgeleide sanger en akteur, vind Pichi verskeie elemente om mee te speel in haar solo vertonings. Een van haar persoonlike hoogtepunte van ‘Ripe ‘n Ready‘ was die een-oog slang burlesk nommer as Eva in die Paradys.

Vroeg in 2024, het Pichi besluit om haar fokus te rig op inhoudskepping van inklusiewe seksopvoeding op haar sosiale media platforms, en sy wil graag haar stem gebruik om kwessies wat die queer gemeenskap affekteer aan te spreek.
